Natural Gas Vehicles (NGVs)
The same natural gas that provides your home with warmth, hot water and many other comforts can also be used to fuel certain vehicles. Natural gas vehicles (NGVs) can improve air quality while reducing the nation’s dependence on foreign oil.
According to NGVAmerica, a national organization dedicated to the promotion of natural gas and hydrogen as transportation fuels, there are over 120,000 NGVs on U.S. roads today and over 8.7 million across the world.
- Over 50 different manufacturers produce 150 models of light, medium and heavy-duty vehicles and engines.
- An equivalent gallon of compressed natural gas (CNG) provides the same miles per gallon as a gallon of gasoline.
NGVs are most practical in fleets because fleets generally operate several vehicles that are centrally maintained and travel more miles daily than typical passenger cars. The use of NGVs is growing in some of the following fleets: buses, garbage trucks, delivery vehicles, and airport shuttles. Roughly 22 percent of all new transit bus orders are for natural gas.
